A CYTOLOGICAL BASIS FOR THE BIOCHEMICAL STUDY OF BRONCHIAL EPITHELIUM

A technique is described for the removal of epithelium from autopsy specimens of human bronchus and trachea so as to give a cell suspension in 0.25 M sucrose containing 0.01 M ethylenediamine tetraacetate, pH 7.4, which is suitable for biochemical study. The technique ensures that the suspension contains the whole of the epithelium from the treated area and that it is uncontaminated with mucus or connective tissue. Total and differential cell counts enable a correlation to be made between biochemical assays and the cytological make-up of the tissue.
